The NOVA Experience
What is “the NOVA Experience?”
The NOVA School's program originated with the conviction that academically talented youngsters will respond positively to a rigorous, relevant, and varied learning environment. We built our reputation on a very strong, rigorous curriculum designed for very bright youngsters.
Over the years,
however, the program has developed into much more than a strong academic
program. The richness and value of the three years at NOVA have become
known as the “NOVA
experience” and includes much more than a strong curriculum. Families
have told us repeatedly that while they are attracted to the school by
the academic program, once their children are a part of NOVA they come
to value the school community, the culture, the rich variety of experiences
and the respectful emotional and social climate as much as the academics.
Fundamentally, the NOVA School learning environment addresses the special social, emotional, and physical needs of highly capable middle school students, as well as their academic needs. NOVA teachers strive to help children develop leadership skills, understand ethical behavior, appreciate adolescence, and value diversity within the school community. There is a great emphasis on respect and responsibility. Students are given opportunities to exercise responsibility, independence, self management, and decision-making under the guidance of supportive adults who understand and appreciate young adolescents. Positive social interaction, communication, responsibility and leadership skills are emphasized throughout the three-year program. Students are encouraged to stretch themselves to try new things, take risks and learn from mistakes.
Most students are very nostalgic about their three years at NOVA and often look back on it as the best learning environment of their school career.
