The NOVA Experience

Visual and Performing Arts

ArtsAt a time when many youngsters find themselves categorizing themselves and others as either athletes or artists or musicians or theater buffs, at NOVA our kids still have the opportunity to try everything. Not only are the visual and performing arts offered to everyone as Specialist classes, but our entire program weaves opportunities of this kind of artistic expression into many every day assignments. Students practice Spanish through music, art and drama in Spanish classes. Social Studies and language arts classes offer many opportunities to utilize dramatic skills in oratories, mock trials, role plays, and skits. All classes at NOVA periodically assign projects that require further development of visual arts skills taught in art class. NOVA is full of creative teachers and students, and creative expression is integrally woven into the fabric of the program.

The Spring Play is a hugely popular experience every year that students never forget. The productions have very high participation and offer wide opportunities for tech work, sound and lighting, prop creation, costume work, and stage management along with acting. The Spring Play is a tremendous community and team building experience every year.

Both music ensembles perform at school assemblies several times a year as well as at Grandparents Day, Graduation, and two evening concerts per year. Band and strings students often find their niche in these performing groups, all the while participating across the board in many other activities.

Visual Art classes prepare a semi-annual Art Show and have participated through the years at Arts Walk. Artwork adorns our halls and classrooms, and The Mod, our dedicated art studio, offers a true artistic space for our artists to work comfortably and creatively.
