The NOVA Experience
There’s lots of variety at NOVA
Variety is the spice of life for middle schoolers. No day or week is exactly the same at NOVA. Whether it's music, art, science, math, environmental education, politics, history, or community service, students learn best when they are actively involved. Here are just a few examples of activities in which NOVA students have participated.
- Archaeological dig near the school yard during cultural studies
- State and regional Math Counts competitions and Geography Bees
- Role-playing famous people in a “Night of the Notables”
- Mock trial about the Whitman Massacre
- 8th grade retreat and high ropes course
- Community service projects, such as nursing home visits, working at the Food Bank, environmental efforts, and working at the Hands On Children’s Museum
- Multi-media computer program design and presentations about famous people during a Biography unit
- Training with a professional mime and clown to develop improvisational performance skills during Winterim Week
- Student council organized spirit days, parties, and community service events
- Field trips to the Squaxin Island Tribal Museum and the Washington State Historical museum in Tacoma to reinforce study of the Pacific Northwest
- Sixth grade students serve a faculty brunch in Life Skills
- Carnival games created to demonstrate probability in Algebra
- An all-school re-creation of El Mercado where students create a Spanish marketplace and buy and sell foods and crafts all in Spanish
