Hello, NOVA families! Today, we’re sending out several materials that are pertinent to the current trimester at NOVA. We hope they help you to feel connected to your student's learning and help to facilitate a closer connection between home and school. Please take some time to read the following:
These overviews cover the content and context of the students' learning in each class and focus on the core content, so you will see core classes, but not enrichments. We hope that the overviews give you the headlines to engage in meaningful, substantive conversation with your student. Some middle school students share readily about their learning and their day's experience, and others are more reticent... and sometimes they shift! In any case, your interest and attention matter, so it's important to engage in and acknowledge what they’re learning and thinking about, even if that’s counter to every signal you're getting. Questions that invite middle schoolers' opinions, critical thinking, creativity, or problem solving are more intriguing than simply reporting, so read up! Know what they are integrating into their understanding of the world, and be part of it!
Student Feedback Flow at NOVA
This document lets you know what you can expect and when. We aim to keep our feedback frequent and regular, but with adequate time for students to make changes in their work habits or approach as they gain personalized insight from their teachers.
Parent Feedback Flow at NOVA
Communications are only really thorough if they are loops, and in our relationship with middle school students, it is important that we hear what they think... and also that we hear the perspectives of their families. This overview will let you know when we’ll solicit your feedback, and we also welcome it anytime you have something to share with us.
Back to School Night
We’re also looking forward to hosting you at our Back to School night! You’ll have the opportunity to travel from class to class and experience what it's like for science to be brought to life with Mr. Campbell, how Mo will both challenge and support you in being a brave math student, and how art can be taught in a way that is both expressive and metacognitive... Our teachers will let you live out the joyful pursuit of learning through our classrooms, and we will have sessions for each grade level to discuss details specific to the grade level. 7th grade parents, you‘ll learn all about this year’s 7th Grade Service focus, and 8th grade parents will learn about how best to support Eighth Grade Projects. We'll see you at school on October 2 at 7pm!
