The NOVA Kid

No two NOVA kids are exactly alike.

Here are just some of the words that best describe our highly capable students.

Word cloud of characteristics of a highly capable child

Not all of these qualities exist in every single gifted student, of course.

Many NOVA kids are a complex blend of these personality traits and competencies.

Does your child:

  • Crave deep learning and big questions and seem years ahead in academics but is still figuring out social skills?
  • Get intensely curious and hyper-focused but is also disorganized?
  • Achieve highly in some academic areas but underperforms in others?
  • Strive for perfection but struggles with anxiety?

Maybe your child is:

  • Smart and spacey.
  • Sophisticated and naive.
  • Quirky, creative and easily frustrated.
  • Independent and insecure.

Any of these combinations might also be a good indicator that you have a NOVA kid!

What About Twice Exeptionality?

Twice exceptional (2e) students are gifted students who have an additional developmental or learning difference that impacts them in the classroom. This may include those with ADHD, dyslexia, dyspraxia, dyscalculia, dysgraphia, or those along the autism spectrum or with processing or emotional disorders.

While we are not a specialized school for 2e learners, we do have students that are 2e.

One NOVA Family’s Story: From Disengaged to All-in

Despite interventions throughout elementary school, one student’s parents said their daughter entered NOVA as a seventh grader who was “withdrawn and dissatisfied.”

“We enrolled in NOVA for seventh grade based on an accidental, random chat with an acquaintance. Honestly, we didn’t really know of any good school options by then, but we were looking for something that might make a difference for our daughter. Going to NOVA for us involved a one-hour commute each way, 6:00 a.m. wake-up times, and a lot of carpooling and planning...But, wow, the effect was almost immediate. Her smile came back! That spark in the eyes and her interest in new things returned!”

On the first snow day of the year, when their daughter found out that the school was closed, she tried to get her parents to take her to school anyway. “That’s what NOVA meant to her. It was her school, it was her time, it was her place. It was offering something so special, something so worthwhile, that she was willing to go even on a snow day!”

Your Kid's Found Their People

They will share a classroom with other engaged and vibrant middle schoolers and be invited to explore new topics and deepen their experiences by skilled teachers.

Not only will they absorb information and cultivate their own unique expressions of ideas—they will do so in a safe place with people that "get them."

This is where the magic happens.

The NOVA School believes that every person has the right to educational and workplace surroundings that are free from all forms of unlawful discrimination. It is the NOVA School Association’s policy that no person will be subjected to unlawful discrimination based on race, color, gender, religion, age, marital status, sexual orientation, gender identity, national or ethnic origin, the presence of any sensory, mental, or physical disability, or any other basis prohibited by law. NOVA School’s non-discrimination policy applies to all facets of its administration.

What it Costs

Land Acknowledgement

NOVA is located on the ancestral lands of the Steh-Chass band of the Squaxin Island Tribe and Nisqually Indian Tribe, who have long been stewards of the region’s waters, plants, and animals. The southernmost point of the Salish Sea, these lands were—and still are—a place of gathering, trade, and community for many Coast Salish peoples. We recognize that all who are not Salish peoples are visitors here. We commit to join these peoples to share their history, build relationships, increase representation, and restore the living world around us.
