About the topic:

Are you feeling overwhelmed by the pressures of modern parenting? What if the key to raising happy, independent kids is doing less — not more? It’s time to break free from the constant worry and give your children the freedom to thrive. Hear from self-proclaimed “free-range” mom and parenting advocate, Lenore Skenazy and discover how to raise confident, responsible kids, all while doing much, much less. We know — it sounds too good to be true. We promise — it’s not. Skenazy will share about her personal journey letting go of the worries that weigh parents down, offering a refreshing perspective on resisting the pressures of hyper-involved parenting.

About the speaker:

Ever since her column “Why I Let My 9-Year-Old Ride the Subway Alone” created a media firestorm, Lenore Skenazy has been declaring that our kids are safer and smarter than our culture gives them credit for. In response to the blowback, she started Free-Range Kids, the blog-turned-book-turned-movement that garnered her the nickname, “America’s Worst Mom.” You may have seen her on  “The Today Show,”  “The Daily Show,” “Dr. Phil” or her own reality show, “World’s Worst Mom.”Skenazy is cofounder and president of Let Grow, a nonprofit promoting childhood independence.

Before all this, she was a reporter and columnist at The New York Daily News and New York Sun. Her other books include “Has the World Gone Skenazy?” and “The Dysfunctional Family Christmas Songbook.”

Skenazy lives in New York City with her husband and beloved computer. Her sons are gainfully employed.

Land Acknowledgement

NOVA is located on the ancestral lands of the Steh-Chass band of the Squaxin Island Tribe and Nisqually Indian Tribe, who have long been stewards of the region’s waters, plants, and animals. The southernmost point of the Salish Sea, these lands were—and still are—a place of gathering, trade, and community for many Coast Salish peoples. We recognize that all who are not Salish peoples are visitors here. We commit to join these peoples to share their history, build relationships, increase representation, and restore the living world around us.
